Adopted by the State Legislature of 1927

The Maine state bird is the black-capped chickadee.

Black-capped chickadees are cheerful birds which can be identified by their characteristic call, which lends their name - chick-adee-dee-dee. They are also called titmouses, dickeybirds, and tomtits. The bird’s markings are gray, black, and light brown, with white cheeks.
