The Apostle Paul / Paul of Tarsus / Saul

Paul of Tarsus, who called himself the Apostle to the Gentiles, together with Simon Peter were the most notable New Testament missionaries. Unlike the 12 Apostles, Paul did not know Jesus in life, although he claimed to have seen the resurrected Jesus while on the road to Damascus, where his encounter with the Lord led to his designation as Apostle to the Gentiles.

The Apostle Paul was the second most prolific contributor to the New Testament, after Luke the Evangelist, and much of what Luke wrote in the Acts of the Apostles was about Paul. Fourteen letters are attributed to Paul, written to churches that he had founded, and comprising the earliest account of Christian doctrine and information about the emerging New Testament Church.

Although the canonical account of his ministry ends while he was still alive and a prisoner in Rome, the traditional story is that he was martyred there.
