The Apostle Andrew

Andrew is the brother of the apostle Peter. Andrew was born at Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. Since he was a Jew, it is likely that Andrew was not his given name, but no Hebrew or Aramaic name is recorded for him.

Like their father, Andrew and Peter were also fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. In fact, the apostles Andrew, Peter, James and John were all partners in a fishing business prior to being called by Jesus to follow Him.

Tradition has it that when Andrew was martyred, he hung upon the cross for three days, suffering great pain yet speaking to any who would listen of the love of Jesus.

Despite the fact that Andrew was the first of the apostles to follow Jesus, not much has been published about him, and most of what has been written is no longer in print or in stock. You may be able to find something used from an Amazon.com bookseller.

Acts Of Andrew: Early Christian Apocrypha (Paperback), by Dennis R. MacDonald, Harold W. Attridge (Editor)
Five major apocryphal Acts survive from the early period of the Christian church, the so-called Acts of Andrew, of Paul, Peter, John, and Thomas. In the canonical New Testament, the apostle Andrew, brother of Peter is mentioned only a dozen times. In The Acts of Andrew, his post-resurrection mission and heroic martyrdom are closely detailed in a series of acts or episodes. This study edition of The Acts of Andrew presents a fresh, new translation of the text with cross-references, notes, and commentary. An extensive introduction also sets out the challenge of recovering and reconstructing the original text. Paperback.
