A Walking Tour of Millinocket Stream
Leaving the mill, we see a part of its power-producing facilities. Brascan has recently been approved to sell
electricity to the New England power grid, which I believe to be its chief interest in the acquisition of Great
Northern Paper Company.
There’s no crime in that, but as a power company they won’t employ as many people as would a paper mill. Will
the levels of pollution decrease, or will they increase as the abandoned paper mill operation deteriorates? Will
the fact that what was once the Great Northern Paper Company no longer employs a significant number of workers
lead to increased oversight of environmental problems that have been ignored in the past?
