Although I had been told that wider boards would have been better, I felt that the standard 2-inch floor boards would be easier to work with. I don't think I was wrong. A selection of 8-foot, 12-foot, and 16-foot lengths minimized the amount of cutting that was necessary, and reduced the waste.
Before I swallowed my pride and accepted Denny's suggestion of starting in the middle of the room, I had put in a couple of lengths of floor along the west side.
Looking south along the north side of the attic. Until I finally bought some impact-resistant bulbs, I was blowing a light bulb everytime I jostled the light cord.
You can see my first five boards in the foreground amidst the junk.
With most of the junk moved to the south side of the attic, I began by working north. The chimney in the background is not an active one. While it is taking up space from the cellar crawlspace to the attic, it ends a few inches short of the roof. My best guess is that, while the house was divided into apartments, there once was two separate heating systems.
