The Civil War Collection, by Jim Taylor and Various Artists
A superb quartet featuring Jim Taylor and friends on hammered dulcimer, fiddle, banjo and guitar, playing music for square dances, hoe-downs, and minstrel shows; for sitting around the campfire or socializing in the parlor ... With fascinating liner notes telling the story of each tune, this album offers 70+ minutes of music (including Gary Owen, Haste to the Wedding, Arkansas Traveler, Seneca Square Dance, Booth Shot Lincoln) -- a rare treat for lovers of string band music and a treasure trove for students of the War Between the States. The Civil War Collection is a co-production of Gourd Music and Pearl Mae Music. Audio CD. Amazon.com

Songs of the Civil War, by Jim Gibson
Melodies last for generations, and these powerful songs from over a hundred years ago still touch us deeply. These are melodies our forefathers sang as they went to battle, and that their families sang as they dealt with the tragic results of the war. Jim Gibson's approach to these songs is restrained and respectful, but always interesting. Most of these selections are quiet and pensive, but some are more rousing. In this, Jim's ninth CD for Hickory Cove, you'll hear his unusual ability to blend different styles of music while never straying far from the melody. Audio CD. Amazon.com |

The Civil War - Traditional American Songs and Instrumental Music Featured in the Film by Ken Burns: Original Soundtrack Recording, by Various Artists
What Ken Burns seems to have found in his work on The Civil War is a deep and heartfelt sorrow; a real sadness for a country that tore itself apart, transforming itself from an 18th century agrarian culture to a 20th century industrial Republic in 4 years of unbelievably bloody war. The music of The Civil War reflects that sadness and sense of loss. Audio CD. Amazon.com |

Union & Liberty: American Civil War Music, composed by George Frederick Root and others
A splendid program of varied, contrasting pieces for voice and
instruments. All performers are complete masters of this music
and its idiomatic performance style, and they execute it with skill, wit and (where appropriate) real depth of feeling. Audio CD. Amazon.com |

The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions: 1998 Studio Cast, by Frank Wildhorn, Jack Murphy, and Various Artists
This is the initial volume of a triple-CD release of The Civil War soundtrack, and it's hard to think that the other two could equal this first installment. The Nashville Sessions evokes images of pitched tents and cannons very well. Bookended with narration by the great casting of Charlie Daniels, the compilation is filled by low-key, solemn tracks. "Old Gray Coat," starts out bleak, then kicks into a nice little country-pop song, but the lyrics uncannily convey images of a war few of us really know much about. Audio CD. Amazon.com |
