In Chapter 2 of Across Five Aprils, the Creightons learn that Fort Sumter in South Carolina has been fired upon by Confederate forces under the command of Brig. General Beauregard. In the first major battle of the American Civil War, the Union garrison commander, Major Anderson, is forced to surrender the fort.
