Across Five Aprils

Geography

As you are reading the novel, locate the towns and the places that are mentioned on a map. I will include a few maps on these pages, but you’ll probably have an easier time, and will gain more from the exercise if you do this on a paper map, marking off the important battle sites.

Once you have identified on your map the location of a battle site, see what else you can learn about that battle.

The events in Chapter 1 take place at the Creighton familMap showing the location of Jasper County in Illinois.y home in Jasper County, in southern Illinois, prior to the beginning of the American Civil War.

At the foot of Walnut Hill, the site of the Creighton family cemetery, Crooked Creek flowed on its way across the farm, spanned at a point where it was widest by a wooden bridge.

The precise location of the Creighton family farm is unclear from the text, but it is said to be about fifteen miles from Newton, the Jasper county seat. Between the Creighton’s house and Newton is Rose Hill, just north of Newton.

In some cases, I will provide some statistical information on this site, as well as links to where you can find additional useful information on the Internet.
