Twelve Thousand Years: American Indians in Maine, by Bruce J. Bourque
My wife and I homeschool our 12 year-old nephew, who is in the 7th grade. In teaching Maine history, I decided to go back and teach the history of the state from the first arrival of human beings in the area rather than at the time of its European colonization. I used this text as a reference in developing my curriculum and, while far more indepth than would be necessary in a 7th grade curriculum, I found it to be an excellent reference for anyone interested in the non-European history of the area that was to become the state of Maine.
